Giving (and Getting) Thanks

The Sherwood Library is thankful for our friends and customers now and throughout the year. What are you thankful for?

Health and family are among the things that many of us value and appreciate. At this time of year, they are among the things we give thanks for. Each reader of this column has his or her reasons to look back on the year and be thankful.

We are grateful for the support of our Friends group that has raised several thousand dollars with their book sale this year. Among other things, that money is used to provide programming for all ages. This year, we hosted a visit by Peter L. Bergen, author of Manhunt: The Ten Year Search for Bin Laden, which was included on the Washington Post list of 50 Notable Works of Non-fiction (Nov. 18, 2012). The Friends also support our Mount Vernon community by providing books to children and seniors who visit during the book sale’s hours and to local literacy organizations.

We are delighted to host community groups such as book clubs, homeowner associations, sports leagues, alumni groups and other non-profit organizations that enrich the lives of our Mount Vernon neighbors.

Currently, our branches are conducting a quick survey. The questions ask why the respondent came to the building, did he or she find what they wanted, and it asks for other comments or suggestions. It’s gratifying that many of our customers write that they find our service professional and friendly. Even more are thankful for the restored hours that began on Sept. 8. We welcome your input all year long. If you have a request or a suggestion, please contact branch manager Denise Morgan at 703-718-8208 or email Denise.Morgan@fairfaxcounty.gov. Sherwood is everywhere you are … in Mount Vernon!
