Games People Play

How many ways can you use your local library? Let us count the ways.

Here’s a question for those who like word games: how many words can you get from LIBRARY? Wordsmith.org came up with 31 words in only a second or two. People need more time than a computer and each of our lists will be in a different sequence, reflecting the way we think.

So, too, individuals in a community will use their local library in different ways. Pass the Sherwood Regional Library in the mornings during tax season and you will see taxpayers lined up outside waiting for AARP volunteers to help with their returns. Occasionally, we host Scout and volunteer projects.

Year round, you’ll also find students being tutored, folks reading magazines, travelers printing airline tickets, people playing board games, and donors depositing eyeglasses for the Lions Club and books for the Friends’ book sale.

What you might not realize is the number of ways you can use the library without coming to the library. Want to follow your investments using Value Line or Morningstar? Do you want to learn a new language? Or read a newspaper article? Here’s a sampling of what you can do using the library’s website: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/dbsremote/

In April, Sherwood will be hosting a meeting to give our Mount Vernon neighbors a brief overview of what we currently do. We’ll talk about helping owners of e-reader devices download software and books. We’ll discuss our efforts to support early literacy and local school initiatives. Most importantly, we’ll solicit your suggestions for how the staff of the Sherwood Regional Library can enrich our neighborhood through programming or using any of our other resources.

And now … how many words can you make from SHERWOOD? Be thinking about how the library can help you. If you prefer not to wait, please write to Branch Manager Denise Morgan at denise.morgan@fairfaxcounty.gov  or call her at 703-718-8208.
