Come up to the Lab!

The technology lab on the 2nd floor of the Sherwood Regional Library is a second home to many local residents who value computer access and appreciate helpful customer service.

The technology lab located on the 2nd floor of the Sherwood Regional Library is a thriving center of information and public service. Equipped with 16 computers, a printer, and a copy machine, the library’s technology lab is a second home to many local residents who value computer access and appreciate helpful customer service.

Among the types of services offered: basic computer and Internet assistance and Microsoft Office guidance. For those learning to use their electronic book (e-book) devices, staff  in the lab and at the Information desk can troubleshoot a wide variety of digital devices. The technology lab boasts scheduled one-on-one computer-based tutoring utilizing a committed group of friendly and helpful volunteers. Also, the Sherwood lab offers periodic free computer classes for beginners. (Please call the library’s information desk or check the Fairfax County Public Library website for dates and times).

The staff and volunteers who spend time in the tech lab tell many stories of exceptional customer service. For instance, a neighbor lost his house to a fire and needed to obtain a driver’s license online through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website. After over two hours of hard work, time and patience on the part of both the customer and a lab assistant, the library was able to equip the customer with both temporary documents immediately and a replacement license sent to his desired address. Many community members walk away from the Sherwood Regional Library technology lab highly satisfied and become repeat customers.

Job seekers come to the tech lab and receive help completing job applications for local employers. Sometimes, these neighbors work with us as well as the Skillsource Center in the South County building.  http://www.myskillsource.org/home/jobseekers_onestop.shtml

Library staff is delighted to help. As funny as it sounds, we’re even happier when they don’t come back ... It means they found a job!
