Catch Us If You Can!

As with so many of life's tasks, when looking to use your local library, yes, there's an app for that!

Last week we talked about using your Fairfax County Public Library card to borrow eBooks for free. This week we aren’t even trying to get you to read books at all.

The library recently introduced a mobile app for the growing number of county residents who own iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices. The new app allows customers to search the library catalog, place holds, check account status, get directions to a branch, and more.

The app also offers a VisualID feature which stores an image of your library card barcode on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. VisualID allows you to have your card number with you at all times. Using your VisualID to check out material at Express Checkout and sign up for the library’s Internet access computers are two examples of the convenience offered.

“Library users with these devices are going to love this app,” said Edwin “Sam” Clay, III, director of Fairfax County Public Library. “It's convenient and efficient: two words our customers like.”

Since the app was first made available in February 2011, it has been downloaded more than 5,000 times and has been used for more than 6,300 transactions (placing holds and renewing books). You can download it at: http://itunes.apple.com/app/fairfax-library/id415410969?mt=8

This is the library’s first app. Development is underway for an Android version.
