Wolverines Win Homecoming Game Against Cavaliers, 26-13

West Potomac's record is now 6-2, while Woodson's is 2-6.

In a wet, slippery game Friday night, the West Potomac Wolverines beat the Woodson Cavaliers, 26-13. The game was pretty tight all four quarters, but West Potomac eventually pulled ahead to finish with a win.

West Potomac Head Coach Jeremiah Davis said the team played well, but a lot of things still didn’t go their way throughout the game. The team made a few mistakes on the field and received multiple penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“A lot of things didn’t go our way. We made a lot of mistakes penalty-wise, but I thought the guys did a good job by continuing to fight through the game,” Davis said.

Because of the weather, West Potomac’s field was muddy and players on both sides sometimes struggled to stay on their feet. However, Davis said he was glad they could prove that the Wolverines could play in different conditions.

“I think it played into the game because we’d run the ball and the guys were slipping,” Davis said. “I wanted to play in these types of conditions to show that we’re a good football team that can play through the mud and the weather.”

Demornay Pierson-El, wide receiver for West Potomac, was a huge contributor to Friday’s win. Within the first five minutes of the first quarter, Pierson-El scored the first touchdown of the night and set the stage for the rest of the game.

Pierson-El’s second touchdown was made with less than eight minutes left in the first quarter. By the end of the night, the 5’9” wide receiver added more than 300 rushing yards to his season record.

Also in the first quarter, middle linebacker and left guard Darien Pickett sacked Woodson’s quarterback, raising the homecoming energy level in the stadium.

At the end of the first half, the score was 14-7 in favor of West Potomac, but the Cavaliers came back on the field with determination and played very tight defense. Often, the Cavaliers held back Pierson-El from reaching the endzone and forced West Potomac’s quarterback Caleb Williams out of the pocket.

Defensive linemen James Lovett, Caleb Chiaia and Patrick Halloran all worked harder on keeping Pierson-El from gaining too many yards in the second half. By the end of the third quarter, the score remained the same, with neither team succeeding in reaching the endzone.

With less than five minutes left in the game, Woodson scored its second touchdown of the night, making the score 20-13 in favor of West Potomac. In the end, the Cavaliers fell short after a last minute attempt was intercepted by Pierson-El with only seconds left in the game.

If anything, the amount of turnovers contributed to the Cavaliers’ lost, according to Head Coach Joe Dishun.

“We usually don’t make very many turnovers, and that hurt us a little bit,” Dishun said. “We also gave up two big plays, getting used to No. 5 [Pierson-El] which was hard for us to simulate. It took a little getting used to for our boys.

Dishun said they’re really proud of the team and how they got right out there and played a good game to the end.

Homecoming king and queen were also announced during the halftime of Friday’s game: Alex Amico and Shauntae Major.

Next week, the Wolverines will play against West Springfield, and Woodson will take on Lake Braddock.
