West Potomac Athletes Commit to Schools on National Signing Day

Chris Blewitt and Jayme Murray signed letters of intent Wednesday on National Signing Day.

West Potomac High School athletes Chris Blewitt and Jayme Murray signed their letters of intent Wednesday to play college ball.

Blewit signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play football this fall at the University of Pittsburgh.

The signing marked the end of a recruiting process that began with Blewitt, a kicker and punter, winning a kicking competition at Pitt last summer.

This past season at West Potomac, the All-District, All-Region, All-Met and All-State selection kicked eight field goals, including a school record setting 51-yarder. All but three of Blewitt's kickoffs reached the end zone for touchbacks. He also averaged 43.5 yards punting.

West Potomac football coach Jeremiah Davis said that Blewitt was a "tremendous" player this past season.

"At Pitt, he's going to do a great job," Davis said. "I was telling someone, 'A football field is 100 yards no matter where you go. If you can kick at the back of the end zone, you're good.' It's great for West Potomac, it's great for him and his family. It'll give him the opportunity to play college ball."

West Potomac senior Jayme Murray also signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the George Mason University Patriots in the fall. Last year, the Wolverines baseball team advanced to their first regional playoff berth in more than 10 years with Murray leading the team in home runs, batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. He earned Patriot District honors, Northern Region honors and All-Met honors as well as his second MVP award at West Potomac.
