West Potomac Football Coach Predicts Competitive Season

New football coach Jeremiah Davis is predicting a smooth transition and competitive upcoming season as he embarks on his first year as the school’s football coach.

“It’s a transition time for us because we’re switching offenses,” Davis told Patch. “So the better the guys the guys catch on the schemes, which they have been, the better it will go for us, offensively and defensively.”

Davis after former coach Eric Henderson parted ways with the school this spring. An alumnus, Davis played defensive end for head coach Joe Paterno at Penn State from 2000 to 2004 and served as Annandale’s defensive coordinator the past seven seasons.

Last season, the Wolverines racked up eight wins to four losses and made it to the second round of the regional playoffs. The team has lost several starters through attrition, but eight players who were juniors or sophomores last year will return this season. Five are returning on offense and three on defense.

“Those are big contributors from the playoff team a year ago,” Davis said.

The team also boasts a “phenomenal kicker,” senior Chris Blewitt, Davis said, which affords the team a lot of opportunities in the special teams area. Blewitt is ranked number four in the nation for punting and already has been offered a full scholarship from the University of Pittsburgh.

“He’s a great athlete and a great asset to the program,” Davis said. “… He does it all."

Davis is switching team captains weekly. The captain for the first week’s game is senior Alex Amico.

The team’s strengths this season include the return game and special positions, Davis said. “Because most of those guys are returners, that would be some of our strengths.”

But Davis remains optimistic about the upcoming months. “We’re looking forward to a good season and hope our fans come out and support us and realize we’re doing a good football program.”
