Sherwood Regional Library to Host Teen Volunteer Fair

Local organizations will have information on hand for teens wishing to make a difference in the community.

Sherwood Regional Library is hosting its first-ever teen volunteer fair next Wednesday, Sept. 26 in the library meeting room.

The event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and is geared toward youths ages 12 through 18, said Jackie Davis, library volunteer coordinator. Davis hopes to have representatives from a dozen local organizations on hand to speak with teens about what volunteer opportunities are available in the community.

Students from West Potomac and Mount Vernon high schools, as well as students at local middle schools, have already been invited, she said. Many of these students are required to complete a certain number of volunteer hours as part of school requirements.

“For the students, it will give them the opportunity to finish their community service hours, give them a chance to talk to the different representatives, just to explore opportunities to see what is out there, and get them some experience,” Davis said. “This is the type of experience that they could use if they decide to apply for a job or of they decide to go to college and need a reference.”

She added, “For the representatives, these are students that are coming in and doing work that they need done, and they’re learning at the same time.”

Students will be able to visit different booths to learn about the various organizations, what hours are available and what tasks need to be done.

Sherwood Regional Library is located at 2501 Sherwood Hall Lane. For more information about the volunteer fair, contact Davis at 703-718-8222 or at jacqueline.davis@fairfaxcounty.gov.
