Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Walt Whitman Middle School on Route 1 back in the mid/late 70's? It occupied the space that had been Mount Vernon High School. Two of my children attended Walt Whitman Middle School at that address then went on to Mount Vernon High School off of Old Mount Vernon Highway.

Hi Marti, Yes, Whitman MS moved to the Route 1 site in 1973, according to information the school distributed last night. It moved to its current location in 1985.

The actual building was constructed during the depression when the WPA was in place to put people back to work on highways, bridges, buildings, etc. The way you can tell is there is a cupala on the top of the school making note of who built it. There is also a fall out shelter sign as you walk in the front door to advise the public that during the war that was a place to shelter.
