Free Training for Voter Registration Volunteers
A training session for volunteers who would like to help people register to vote in the fall presidential election will be led by Karla Mahoney, retired outreach director of the Fairfax County registrar’s office. The training is sponsored by the MVUC Social Justice Council.
In June, about 35 MVUC members and others in the community learned how to register voters at a similar seminar. Working at card tables in shopping centers and at the Huntington Metro, volunteers registered 625 voters during June and July in the Mt. Vernon District between the Beltway and Ft. Belvoir for two local registration groups. The registration deadline is Oct. 15.
The training covers how to conduct a voter registration drive, ways to register (in person or by mail), how to check that the registration form is accurately completed, laws about handling and submission of registration forms, registration deadlines, new voter ID laws, and absentee voting.
