Carl Sandburg Student Receives Champion of Character Award

Seventh grader Hannah Boster plays soccer with the Lee-Mount Vernon Soccer Club.

Carl Sandburg Middle School seventh-grader Hannah Boster received the 2012 Mount Vernon District Champion of Character Award on Tuesday.

The Fairfax County Athletic Council and the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services selected Boster for the award based on nominations from her coaches. The awards are granted to youth athletes, coaches, and parents who exemplify superb sportsmanship and character. Boster is a member of the Lee-Mount Vernon Soccer Club U13 Red Patriots team.

Boster received the award at a ceremony at the Fairfax County Government Center Tuesday evening.

“I’m really surprised and very honored by the award,” Boster remarked.

Boster's soccer coach Jim Herron has coached her for four years and helped nominate her for the award.

"Hannah is a confident and strong student athlete with a humble personality that will quickly deflect her success on the field with a compliment to a teammate,” Jim Herron said. “Her respect for officials, opponents, coaches, family, community and her teammates is a great example for all of us."
