Poll: 47 Percent of Independent Voters Rate Allen 'Unfavorable'

Public Policy Polling shows 47 percent of Independent voters give Allen unfavorable rating, 20 percent give him favorable rating.

Virginia's U.S. Senate race is sure to be one of the most-watched and closest races in the country and a new poll shows again how close it is, with Tim Kaine leading by just 3 percentage points, at 46 percent, versus 43 percent for George Allen.

What the poll also shows is that just 20 percent of the state's Independent voters have a "favorable" view of former Sen. George Allen, a Republican, and 47 percent have an "unfavorable" view of Allen, who is also a former governor.

Public Policy Polling of Raleigh, N.C., a self-described Democratic polling company, conducted the poll with 500 Virginia voters from July 21st-24th.

In a blog post about the poll results, Tom Jensen, director of Public Policy Polling, explained: "It's not that independent voters are in love with Kaine: his 43/38 favorability breakdown with them is decent but not earth shattering. But they really don't like Allen. Just 20% rate him positively to 47% with a negative opinion."
