Fairfax County Asks State to Share Surplus Funds

Sharon Bulova signs letter with other jurisdictions asking governor to share surplus.

Fairfax County is among a number of localities asking Gov. Bob McDonnell if the state can slice off some of its surplus and share it with the state's cities and counties.

"...while state revenues (sales and individual income taxes, capital gains taxes) are recovering, local revenues are not bouncing back nearly as quickly," Bulova and others wrote in a letter to the Governor.

In addition to Bulova writing on behalf of Fairfax County, she was joined by leaders from the City of Alexandria, Prince William County, Arlington County, City of Manassas, City of Fairfax, City of Falls Church, City of Manassas Park, and Loudoun County.

According to a story by WTOP, the county and city leaders from nine jurisdictions say the surplus should allow the state to eliminate $60 million in expenses the state shifted to local governments. Local leaders say the money is needed to offset losses in property taxes that occurred when the housing market declined.
