30th Senate District Primary Candidate Running for New Office

Democrat Libby Garvey jumping into crowded Arlington County Board of Supervisors' race

, who ran against  and in the Democratic primary for state Senate District 30 in August, isn't retiring from politics. Even though she in the three-way race, she announced on her Web site this week that she plans to run for the Arlington County Board of Supervisors.

"...with Barbara’s [Favola] election to the Virginia Senate, I have decided the Arlington County Board is a natural place for my skills and 15 years of experience," she said on her site. "New perspectives are always a good thing, and they are most effective when combined with experience and proven leadership skills. I can offer this unique combination to our community as we enter a time of unprecedented growth and change for Arlington."

Garvey's term on the Arlington County School Board ends Dec. 31. The special election to replace Favola takes place in either January or April, depending on the date of her resignation.

In seeking the Democratic nomination for Senate District 30, Garvey, a resident of Arlington County, won 25.3 percent of the race, Krupicka won 36 percent and Ebbin won the primary with 38.8 percent. Ebbin won the Senate race Nov. 8 by 64.7 percent against Republican Tim McGhee.

  • 41 percent of the district: Alexandria City
  • 31 percent of the district: Fairfax County
  • 28 percent of the district: Arlington County

Garvey spent $234,481 in the Senate primary race, which was the second most-expensive in Virginia, topping out at $746,268.
