Pedestrian Struck on Richmond Highway
A 60-year-old man was crossing the roadway when he was struck by a Fairfax County Police car. He was not in a crosswalk.
A pedestrian was hit by a Fairfax County Police cruiser Tuesday afternoon while crossing Richmond Highway, Fairfax County Police reported.
The pedestrian, a 60-year-old man from the Alexandria area, was not using a crosswalk to cross the highway, and he was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
The accident occured around 2 p.m. and closed some southbound lanes on Richmond Highway a "substantial distance" from the intersection at Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, police reported.

The investigation is continuing. Police noted that pedestrian safety is a high priority and are directing residents to the Fairfax County Pedestrian Program for more information.
In addition, police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call the non-emergency number at 703-691-2131.

Just yesterday, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced a multi-modal transportation study along the Route 1 corridor south of the Beltway. The study will look at pedestrian safety, along with Metrorail expansion, bus rapid transit and other transportation and safety improvements.

In January, a van struck and killed a woman crossing Richmond Highway. A man was struck and killed in the Belle Haven area in October 2012.
