Fairfax County Police Shoot, Kill Man at Homeless Shelter

An FCPD officer discharged his weapon after the man reportedly assaulted an officer.

Fairfax County Police are investigating the killing of a man at a homeless shelter by an officer who responded to a call of a fight.

FCPD officers responded to a report of a fight at 9155 Richmond Highway at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. A man had assaulted several individuals, according to a news release from the department. 

The address is listed as the Eleanor U. Kennedy Shelter, which is operated by Fairfax County as emergency housing for homeless men and women.

One of the responding officers was assaulted and one officer fired a shot, hitting the man, according to the release. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. The individuals who were assaulted by the subject were also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to Eddy Azcarate, public information officer for the Fairfax County Police Department, details confirming whether the assaulted officer or another officer discharged his weapon along with other details of the incident are currently being investigated by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau and Internal Affairs.
