Virginians Donated $1.4 Million So Far to 2012 Presidential Candidates

Virginia Obama supporters gave $724,465 so far; Virginia GOP gave Republican presidential candidates $688,414 as of June 30th

Virginians are opening their pocketbooks for the next presidential election in November 2012, donating $1.4 million so far, as of June 30th, to the campaigns of President Barack Obama and at least eight Republican contenders for the job, according to Federal Election Commission records.

In all, Virginia supporters of Obama have given his re-election campaign a total of $724,465. The "221xx" ZIP code area in McLean was split, giving to both Democrats and Republicans, with $131,000 going to Mitt Romney and $134,000 to Obama. Newt Gingrich's McLean-area neighbors donated $26,900 to his campaign. They donated more ($43,000) to Tim Pawlenty.

Obama saw most of his money come from Arlington, with donations from the "222xx" ZIP codes giving $143,126; Alexandria-area "223xx" ZIP code donors gave $90,493. Nationally, the campaign to re-elect President Obama has taken in $45.4 million so far.

In total, Virginians handed over $688,414 to Republican candidates.
