Shot Alexandria Police Officer Honored at GW Parkway Classic Race

Runners raced in honor of officer and Boston Marathon victims.

Thousands of runners competed Sunday in the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile and 5K, honoring an Alexandria police officer as well as the victims of the bombings at last week's Boston Marathon.

The race took place less than a week after the Boston marathon bombings, and many runners wore blue and yellow ribbons, the colors of the race, in remembrance of the victims. This year's Parkway Classic also honored Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy, who was shot during a traffic stop in Old Town in February and is now recovering. Local police took donations for Laboy, who is recuperating.

Race organizers were strict about security in light of the bombings at the Boston Marathon, sealing trash cans and checking bags.
