MVCCA Announces 2013 Award Winners

All winners will be recognized at the annual gala on April 27.

The Mount Vernon Council of Citizens' Associations (MVCCA) has announced the recipients of its 2013 Citizen of the Year, Organization of the Year, and Student of the Year awards.

Citizen of the Year: Becky & Jeff Todd have been stars in the Mount Vernon community for over 30 years. Prior to Jeff Todd’s death in 2011, together they championed those in need and local athletic teams and helped Richmond Highway to revitalize and grow. Since the death of her husband, Becky has continued to work tirelessly, carrying on the work they started.

Organization of the Year: Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce (MVLCC) and the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC). Both the SFDC and MVLCC, are under the directorship of Volunteer Boards of Directors. Collectively, they have been champions for the revitalization of the Richmond Highway Corridor. Their efforts have been helping to take the Corridor from a predominance of gas stations and low budget motels and shops to the vibrant place it is becoming.

As a member of Future Educators Association, Reemal Saheer teaches a group of students ages 5-13 and, in so doing, has realized that her positive attitude can make a difference. Evenings and weekends, she volunteers at her Mosque.

All of these outstanding awardees will be recognized at the MVCCA Gala being held from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 27 at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club. Tickets are $55 per person.
