Update: FCPS Cancels School, Offices Open

The National Weather Service says roads may still be slick

Update 8:28 a.m.: Fairfax County announced that all public schools will be closed today as well as extra curricular activities on school grounds.

Earlier this morning the National Weather Service predicted that the freezing rain would taper off by 9 a.m., but that roads may still be slick due to overnight precipitation.

The service says there is a 30% chance of rain today before noon, but a 70% chance of rain tonight after midnight.  Expect temperatures in the 30s.

Update: 9:29 p.m.: The National Weather Service says there is a 90% chance it could rain before noon tomorrow.  Expect temperatures near 40 degrees and winds around 10 mph. On Tuesday night, the Service expects rain to develop after midnight with a mix of snow after 3 a.m.

Update 5:17 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a winter advisory for the D.C. metro area from 10 p.m. until 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Service says there is a chance of snow and sleet before 9pm, followed by freezing rain and sleet between 9pm and midnight. After midnight  expect freezing rain. Only 0.1 of an inch of ice is expected tonight and less than half an inch of nighttime snow and sleet. 

The advisory means that the weather could cause traveling difficulties and the Service warns that drivers should exercise caution on the road.

Fort Hunt drivers coming back from Martin Luther King Day festivities may want to be extra careful on the roads tonight. 

The National Weather Service says there is a 20% chance of snow after 4 p.m. today, and a 100% chance of snow and rain late tonight.

The Service predicts snow, freezing rain, and sleet before midnight, but  rain or freezing rain should fall between midnight and 3am. Rain should continue into the early morning. Total snow accumulation should be about a half an inch.  According to weather.com, expect temperatures to stay around 30 degrees, with winds E at 5 to 10 mph.
