John Alexander DAR Chapter Earns Honors at Annual State Conference

The chapter earned honors for its service to veterans.

The John Alexander Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution participated in the Virginia DAR’s 117th annual State Conference in Richmond last weekend.

The Alexandria-based chapter earned several honors from the state organization. One of the most important was the election of former chapter regent, Mary B. White as State Historian for Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution.

“Mary White is a long-time member and has been extremely supportive of our chapter and of the Virginia DAR," Chapter regent Eve Stocker said in a press release. "We could not be more proud of her election to statewide office.”

The chapter also earned distinction for its support of the DAR Service for Veterans, DAR Project Patriot, National Defense, the Armed Forces Retirement Home, and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.

The chapter was also recognized at the state conference for raising more than $500 in donations in 2012 and is on pace to double that amount in 2013.

“Our chapter has been a staunch supporter of our military, as well as local military and veterans organizations since 1932, when we were established in Alexandria,” chapter historian Linda Greenberg said.

Regent Eve Stocker agreed. “Many of our members have a background in national security and national defense, and so our continued support of these projects is especially meaningful.”

The chapter provides care packages to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and those recovering at Landstuhl Medical Center, Germany, and the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

“It’s been a wonderful experience to help our troops,” DAR Project Patriot chapter chairman Carrie Ann Alford said.

John Alexander chapter membership recently reached 154 members, and continues to grow, with an active group of members under 36 years of age referred to as “Juniors.”  The chapter is active in community events, including the annual Constitution Week Proclamation ceremony and the George Washington Birthday Parade in Old Town Alexandria.
