GW Parkway Closures This Week

Expect lane closures, construction at the Humpback Bridge.

As with all road construction projects, inclement weather may require adjustments to the schedules, including the possibility of postponement. The NPS will continue to inform the public and the media of any adjustments in the work schedules. Every effort will be made to minimize traffic delays and accomplish the work in a timely manner. The NPS regrets any inconvenience and appreciates all motorists' understanding and patience. 

Work Continues for the Arlington Potomac Interceptor; Arlington Potomac Interceptor/Dominion Virginia Power Begin Duct bank relocation work

The Arlington County Board, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), has begun relocation of an electrical duct bank as part of the long term Potomac Interceptor sewer project. Dominion Virginia Power construction crews will perform this work on the southeast side of Memorial Avenue between the Women In Military Service for America Memorial and the Arlington National Cemetery Visitors Center.

The Dominion Virginia Power Contractors, along with the NPS / U.S. Park Police, have temporarily closed the sidewalk on the south east side of Memorial Avenue.

There will be no road construction work performed during daytime hours. Construction crews will work during evening or nighttime hours. Any lane closures along Memorial Avenue will have signs to divert traffic.

It is anticipated this work will cause minimal disruption to motorists; however, it will affect pedestrians. The sidewalk on the south east side of Memorial Avenue will be closed to pedestrians. Pedestrians/Visitors walking in the area should use the crosswalk outside the Arlington National Cemetery Visitors Center. The work is expected to continue on Memorial Avenue until mid-to-late November.

Boundary Channel Bridge on the GWMP (a.k.a. "Humpback" Bridge)

The north tunnel under the George Washington Memorial Parkway is now open to the public. Pedestrians wishing to reach the Potomac River shoreline may reach the shoreline from the North Pentagon parking lot by crossing the pedestrian bridge. Once over the Boundary Channel, pedestrians are to follow the trail to the south end of Columbia Island, passing through the north tunnel underneath the "Humpback" Bridge, onto the west shore of the Potomac River. Pedestrians are directed to stay on the pathway, as the contractor continues landscaping work.

Work for November 5, through November 12, 2011

  • Continuing site cleanup, landscaping and punch list work
  • Asphalt milling, paving and striping

Traffic Control/Weekend and Night Work

  • Weekdays: Monday, November 7, through Friday, November 11 - 10am to 3pm, no lane closures expected
  • Weekend Work: Friday, November 4 - 7pm, through Sunday, November 6 - 5pm, expect single lane closures in both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Parkway

The Mount Vernon Trail: During the new phase of construction, the trail will be temporarily moved to allow visitor access through the construction area. Please use caution as construction vehicles and equipment will be crossing the Mount Vernon Trail to access the construction site.
