Gov. Announces Route 1 Transportation Analysis Study

Extending Metrorail, bus rapid transit, pedestrian improvements are all options being considered in the year-long study.

Extended Metrorail, bus rapid transit, roadway changes, pedestrian and bicycle routes are all options on the table for Route 1 south of the Beltway, as Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the Department of Rail and Public Transportation has started a “multimodal transportation alternatives analysis.”

The study “will set the stage for implementation of a program of projects that address the need for improved connections and access for people who live, work, and travel in the corridor,” according to a release from the governor’s office.

Gov. McDonnell acknowledged the challenges and gridlock residents of the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County face on a daily basis, particularly during the morning and evening commutes.

The 12-month study will incorporate comments from residents, local governments and other stakeholders, and technical analysis of the options—taking into account the complications of land-use regulations and physical structure along the corridor.
