Local Kids Organize 5K Race to Support Breast Cancer Research

Kids Sending Smiles will have a 5K Run/Walk Oct. 19 at Burke Lake Park.

Kids Sending Smiles (KSS) — a non-profit organization started by NoVa elementary school children — will show its support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by organizing a 5K Run/Walk at Burke Lake Park. The race is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. Oct. 19.

"Many KSS members have had a parent, relative or family friend afflicted by breast cancer. For this reason, the kids decided to hold a family friendly 5k walk/run and donate proceeds from the race to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation," said President Laurie Underwood in a recent news release. "At the race, kids can also make cards and contribute to a banner to be donated to breast cancer patients."

Although young, KSS has made a huge impact with their charity and volunteer work. Recently, KSS members organized a bake sale and lemonade stand to raise money for victims of the Moore, OK, tornado.

Each month, KSS members choose a local or national cause or organization and make plans to raise money to support that specific organization. For more information about this month's 5K run, visit Kids Sending Smiles.
