Make Sock Puppets With Those Extra Socks

Got lots of single socks around? Sew sock dolls!

Have a collection of single socks?  Looking for a fun and simple way to introduce kids to sewing?  Try some sock dolls.  These one-of-a-kind creations are a great project for beginning sewing and a fun way to create toys to add personality and fun to any child's room.  If you are buying socks, start small.  Even toddler socks expand quite well when filled with stuffing.  Have fun collecting different prints, patterns and colors of socks for your dolls.

Single sock dolls can be created by cutting the fabric off the toe.  Sew the toe closed with a simple running or hem stitch - if you like you can even change the shape with your stitches to make ears.  Stuff the sock and let the heel make the seat of the doll.  The cuff end is split and then stitched together to form legs.  Now you can use the extra fabric from the  toe to add arms, larger ears, legs, an elephant trunk or any other details.  Each piece can be sewn and stitched on.

A great advantage of socks is that you won't need a very sharp needle to cut through the knit fabric - a plus for kids who are learning.  Look for embroidery needles with a blunt tip.  The knit doesn't tend to unravel too much, making it well suited to stitchers learning to sew.

A good stitch will move through both sides, wrap around and repeat, sealing the edge shut.  Embroidery thread in different colors can be used to sew eyes, noses and other features.  These can also be drawn on with permanent markers or sewn on with buttons.  If making dolls for small children stay away from buttons which can detach and become choking hazards.

For variations try creating different animals or mythical creatures.  Create a pair of dolls and trade with a friend.  Or write special stories to tell of the adventures of your doll.  Sewing sock dolls is a great way to try out textile arts and sculpture and may even lead to future sewing or sculpture projects.
