Creative Fall Art Projects for the Whole Family

As the days grow shorter, plan some fun art projects for fall that involve everyone in your household.

Friday was the official first day of fall, a season of transition and change as the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler. Schedules also seem to get busier in fall, making it a great season to set aside some time for creativity at home. Below are a few ideas for this fall:

Visit this site for great images of the art of Andy Goldsworthy and spend some time in your yard looking for natural materials with unique shapes, textures and colors to create installation art in nature.

Twigs, stones, leaves (fall colors coming soon) and seed pods can be great raw material for outdoor design work. Be sure to take a picture to record your creation. It can also be fun to leave your design and see how it is transformed over time by natural elements.

Look around for "found art" in nature—interesting shapes in branches, beauty in the form of seed pods, see what you can notice. You might want to draw or photograph your discoveries and share with your friends. See if people can guess where you found such interesting shapes, colors and lines.

Try choosing a color and as you walk, see how many different shades of that color you can find. With the rain, there are so many greens but as fall colors change, you will find more and more shades of yellow, gold, red and brown. You can take a color walk inside too—look around your home for things of the same color—you might focus on a collection of toys, clothes or other household objects. How many blues can you find? How many different pinks? This is a great activity for building observation skills and descriptive vocabulary.

On cooler early evenings, enjoy a family drawing or building night. Work individually or in pairs to draw, collage, build with blocks or create with recycled materials. Share your work when finished. This is a great way to discover some of the hidden creative talents in a group and a fun way to get everyone involved. Divide into groups and create art or constructions to share and present to other family members. This can be a great way to connect generations and get everyone involved having fun.
