Widening of Richmond Highway to Start Soon

The project is expected to be completed in 2016.

Discussion surrounding the widening of Richmond Highway has been circling for years now, and Alexandria residents will soon see the beginning of that project.

The section of the road between Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and Telegraph Road will go from four to six lanes. Edythe Kelleher, executive director of the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) said motorists should see the work on the road begin in the near future. Kelleher said unfortunately, there will still be a bottleneck when the project is completed where the road will still have only four lanes.

(VDOT) and Fairfax County to widen the 3.5-mile segment of Richmond Highway. When completed, the highway will be able to accommodate transit, bicycle and pedestrian access. The widening of Richmond Highway is scheduled to be completed by 2016.

Construction on Mulligan Road is also nearing completion. Kelleher said this will also provide an alternative transportation route for drivers.
