The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Fairfax County and the city of Alexandria from noon until 9 p.m. today.
Temperatures will hover around the 90-degree mark, with heat index values in the mid-90s. According to the weather service, today marks the peak of the first stretch of summer-like heat.
Because area residents have not yet acclimated to hot conditions, the weather service suggest taking extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Participants in Memorial Day activities should be mindful of the heat index and plan accordingly, according to the weather service.
People should also remember to drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned room or out of the sun. Those working or spending time outside should reschedule strenuous activities for the evening hours, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.
