Schooner 'Virginia' Sailing into Alexandria in April

The ship has sailed as far south as Trinidad, east to Bermuda, north to Prince Edward Island, and all along the Atlantic Coast of the United States.

Schooner Virginia will be docking in Alexandria for tours in April.

The schooner, a re-creation of its namesake vessel, the Virginia, which was the last pure sailing vessel used by the Virginia Pilot Association, will sail into Alexandria and be in port Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.

The ship, docked at the G/H Pier on the north end of the marina, 201 N. Union St., will be open for tours both days, from noon to 5 p.m.

The namesake vessel was in service from 1917 to 1926 in The Chesapeake Bay. Almost entirely handmade, Schooner Virginia is the first tall ship built on the Norfolk waterfront in nearly 80 years. After nearly two-and-a-half years under construction, the vessel was launched and christened on Dec. 10, 2004.

Schooner Virginia was designed using the blueprints that were used in building the original Virginia. The ship has sailed as far south as Trinidad, east to Bermuda, north to Prince Edward Island, and all along the Atlantic Coast of the United States.
