Getting the Word Out on Huntington Flood Prevention Bond Referendum

Members of the Huntington community will begin handing out flyers Saturday to remind people to vote “Yes” for the Storm Drainage Improvements Bond. The bond will fund a levee to prevent repeated severe flooding in the area.

Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Huntington Community Center at 9:30 a.m. to receive flyers to hand out around the neighborhood. Alan Ruof, the floodwall coordinator for Huntington Community Association, said people just need to be reminded about the bond with Election Day right around the corner.

“It’s an informational handout to remind people that they should vote on Nov. 6 to help Huntington,” said Ruof. “They can do this by voting yes to the Storm Drainage Improvements Bond. There’s additional information on the handouts that explain reasons for voting yes.”

In 2006 and 2011, more than 160 homes were flooded by water from Cameron Run. In both incidents, Fairfax County provided funding for emergency services.

In April of this year, the Huntington Community Association submitted a petition with more than 1,300 signatures from people expressing support for flood protection for the Huntington community, and in May the Board of Supervisors voted 6-to-3 to offer a bond referendum on the ballot on Nov. 6.

Ruof said people are aware of the flooding issue in Huntington, but they have busy lives. Passing out flyers and providing information will remind the community to vote in favor of the bond to help Huntington. Ruof and the volunteers hope to have the flyers out and into voters’ hands by Sunday, Nov.4.
