Neighborhoods in Fort Hunt and Hybla Valley celebrated National Night Out Tuesday with community get-togethers, barbecues and ice cream socials.
In Gum Springs, residents flocked to the Gum Springs Community Center to dance, create art, play sports and feast on hot dogs. Reidents also set up a station for blood pressure and other health checks and a voter registration booth.
The evening also included a raffle and hand-outs of National Night Out bracelets. The nationwide event began in the 1970s as a way to get people out of their homes and meet each other with the common purpose of making communities safer by raising crime prevention awareness.
