Phase I of Wayfinding Signs Along Route 1 Completed

The Route 1 area may now be a little easier to navigate now that Phase I of the Wayfinding Signage project is complete. Phase I of the project recently came to an end, and the new signs mark Richmond Highway's commercial areas, said Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation's Executive Director Edythe Frankel Kelleher.

SFDC, VDOT and Fairfax County unveiled the first of 12 new Richmond Highway wayfinding signs in a November ceremony. The first sign to go up is located outside the Potomac Square shopping center on Richmond Highway. The sign marks the Mount Zephyr commercial area. Other signs that are now completed include North Gateway, Penn Daw, Groveton and Hybla Valley.

Phase II of the project will include seven additional directional signs that will direct drivers to different historical areas and landmarks in the Alexandria area, Kelleher explained Monday.

The Richmond Highway Wayfinding Signage program is part of a statewide pilot program by VDOT that SFDC conceived in 2005, according to a statement previously issued by SFDC.

SFDC collaborated with VDOT, Fairfax County Department of Transportation, TMG Construction and Merje, a design firm, to ensure the signs comply with visibility and safety laws.
