Patch Picks: 5 Great Non-Profits Making A Difference

A wide range of non-profits serve the Mount Vernon area

Each week Fort Hunt Patch highlights the best, the most, the newest, the tastiest of whatever the topic of the day is. This week we are naming five great non-profit organizations making a difference in our community.

1. Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theater.  The impact of the theater in the Mount Vernon community is really two-fold.  Not only does the offer local kids a creative and productive outlet for self-expression, it offers the community lively and

2. Friends of Dyke Marsh. As the country continues to pay attention to society’s impact on the environment, the work of thebecomes even more important. The non-profit organization raises money for scientific research of the marsh and seeks to educate the public about the environmental issues facing the region.

3. New Hope Housing. In the winter months, New Hope Housing is a lifeline for homeless families and single adults seeking shelter. This winter took over Alexandria Shelter, expanding its reach in the northern Virginia area.

4. United Community Ministries. It’s not hard to brag about . From giving housing to families fleeing from domestic abuse to offering job counseling to the unemployed, the social-service organization is committed to helping low-income individuals living along the Route one corridor.

5. The Friends of the Sherwood Regional Library. is a non-profit organization that raises money for the Sherwood Regional Library. The money raised by this organization not only supports the community-based programs the library offers, but also the fundamental services patrons enjoy everyday.

This list certainly isn't exhaustive. There are plenty of other community organizations, boy scouts troops, churches and non-profits that are reaching out to people in need.
