Macy's: Five Stores Closing, 2,500 Laid Off

Approximately 2,500 employees at the Macy's department store chain will be laid off and five stores will close in the coming weeks under a company reorganization plan announced Wednesday.

The five Macy locations that will close are not in the Washington, D.C., area, but it appears positions will be reduced at Macy locations across the country, according to a statement from the company.

There is also no word yet if the Macy's in Springfield, VA will be impacted by these staff reductions.

The changes are expected to generate $100 million in savings per year.

"We continue to maintain a very strong nationwide network of stores through an ongoing process of selectively adding new locations while also trimming those that no longer meet our performance requirements or where our leases were not renewed," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

The five stores closing include:

• Fiesta Mall, Mesa, Ariz.
• Metcalf South Shopping Center, Overland Park, Kan. 
• Jamestown Mall, Florissant, Mo.
• Medley Centre, Irondequoit, N.Y.
• Fashion Place Mall, Murray, Utah
