Fairfax Water Warns Residents of Impersonator

Fairfax Water received a few reports from residents in July that someone was impersonating an employee for the company and entering their homes.

After receiving the reports, Fairfax Water posted information about how to identify their employees on the company's website. According to the website, all Fairfax Water employees carry photo ID and their vehicles and field staff’s clothing bear the company's logo.


Fairfax Water warns that during the summer months, they may have interns with their company who do not wear clothing with the company logo. However, all interns have photo ID while interning with the company.

"If you don't have an appointment with Fairfax Water, you can call our offices and get information before allowing someone into your home," said Jeannie Bailey, spokesperson for Fairfax Water.

Bailey said there have also been possible impersonating incidents in Prince William County and Maryland. At the time of the incidents, law enforcement was informed of the issue.

Fairfax Water provides the following tips:

• If someone comes to your door and identifies themselves as a Fairfax Water employee, please ask for their identification or call 703-698-5800, TTY 711 to verify before letting them into your home.
• Fairfax Water employees do not receive or accept any form of payments during service calls and we do not collect water-service fees door-to-door.
  
• Most water meters are located outside of a customer’s home. Therefore Fairfax Water employees typically DO NOT require access to a customer’s home to read a meter. 
  

Fairfax Water is currently working on the water main along Route 1, replacing the cast iron water mains with a water main made with stronger, long lasting materials and which will not be susceptible to water main breaks.
