Fairfax County Animal Shelter Now Accepting Dogs

The shelter temporarily suspended the intake of dogs after several animals exhibited symptoms of an unspecified upper respiratory illness.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter opened the floor for adoption and started taking in dogs again Tuesday, according to a recent news release. The shelter temporarily stopped taking in dogs after several animals showed symptoms of an unspecified upper respiratory illness.

Several dogs fell ill, and one dog died due to canine influenza virus (CIV). According to the news release, initial test results are negative for CIV and the dogs that were sick are improving.

Dogs that were exposed to the illness are currently being kept in a contained area, isolated from other dogs until they are cleared for adoption by the shelter’s veterinarian.

The entire Shelter has been cleaned and sanitized so pets can safely enter the Shelter without being exposed to upper respiratory illness. The shelter is now open to take dogs, cats and other animals.

Thursday marks the beginning of a month-long adoption promotion that includes half-off adoption fees for all dogs and puppies. Shelter staff plans to have the adoption floor stocked with healthy, available dogs by Wednesday.
