Earth Day Fun at River Farm

Despite rain, kids had fun playing games, listening to stories, and planting

Despite some rain on Friday, more than 100 area families came out to enjoy an Earth Day Family Fun Day at River Farm, courtesy of the American Horticultural Society and Patch. The 25-acre estate is located at 7931 E. Boulevard Drive in Alexandria. Situated along the banks of the Potomac River, the grounds were blooming with spring flowers.

A large tent pitched on a patio overlooking the river provided plenty of shelter for the free event, which included arts and crafts activities. Children planted seeds, tossed bean bags and created necklaces from recycled trees. Inside, Mother Earth, aka Kathi McNeil, read Earth-friendly stories to children. McNeil is president of Friends of Huntley Meadows Park.

River Farm is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding national holidays, and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from early April through Sept. 25. For directions, visit www.ahs.org/river_farm/directions.htm.
