County Offers Summer Camps for Kids of All Ages

Kayaking, chess and soccer camps are three of many options.

Looking for fun activities for the kids this summer? Patch has got you covered. Here are some exciting opportunities for children of all ages in the Mount Vernon area. Kayak Skills Camp

  • Location:
  • Description: A fun combination of land and water activities, with an emphasis on developing and enhancing kayaking skills. Learn many different strokes to maneuver kayaks while considering weather, tides, currents and safety gear. Session may include a day trip to another nearby location.
  • Ages: 10 years to 14 years, 11 months

Chess Camp

  • Description: Spend a week with the Silver Knights chess coaches, including several state champions and national masters! Learn openings, tactics, endgames and more. Campers are divided into groups by skill level. Beginner through experienced players are welcome. Snack and fresh air breaks planned in as well as lunch and recess for full-day campers. Every camper receives a t-shirt and chess set or free entry to a chess tournament. No camp July 4. NOTE: Full-day and half-day options available, check class length

Young artists will enjoy a variety of creative adventures filled with sculpture, collage, watercolor, Mexican tin art and more! Learn about Cloisonne as you make pirate bling and mermaid treasure. Study the art of Romare Bearden as you collage a fierce pirate or a beautiful mermaid. There will be a bounty of treasures to discover and fun to be had both on land and sea! Half-day camps, bring snack and drink. There is a supply fee for this camp of $30 payable to the instructor on the first day.

Swing & Swim Camp

  • Location:
  • Description: Morning tennis instruction with afternoon swim lessons provides the ultimate experience! All levels welcome. Other sports and games will also be introduced. Bring a snack, water bottle, lunch, swimsuit, towel, tennis racket and one can of tennis balls. No camp July 4.

Summer R.O.C.S. Camp

  • Location:
  • Description: This summer R.O.C.S. (RECenters Offer Cool Stuff)! Children will be grouped by age to enjoy swimming, arts & crafts, cooperative games and exciting themes. Campers will come home daily saying camp ROCked! Camps also offer special events or field trip (additional fee may be collected). Bag lunch, drink and swimsuit/towel needed daily. Campers may be transported by bus to local schools for gym use. No camp July 4. Mount Vernon pool closed for maintenance Aug 27-31.

Art Explorers Camp

  • Description: Bring out the artist in you in this fun and entertaining camp! Explore a variety of art mediums such as photography, painting, drawing, fabric art, beadwork and more. Emphasis is on creativity, fun, games and the love of art. Bring a smock, snack, lunch and drink daily. Swim time may be offered each session. No camp July 4.

Scuba Diving Camp

  • Description: Learn scuba this summer! Designed to challenge participants in a supportive, fun and educational environment. Certified professionals focus on individualized attention, skill development and supervision during dry and wet adventures! This camp prepares students for the PADI open water dives (not included) by providing the classroom and confined water requirements. The take home educational materials fee of $75 is payable to instructor on the first day. Please bring a snack, lunch, drink, swimsuit and towel daily.

  • Ages: 4 years to 6 years, 11 months
  • Days and times: 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday
  • Start date: Week of June 12
  • Class length: Two hours, 30 minutes
  • Fee (in/out of county): $105/$120
