I would love to see a Trader's Joe's in the Hybla Valley area. Unfortunately, this space is probably not large enough. But if enough people express a demand for a Traders Joe's store in our area, eventually they will come.

With all due respect, this kind of piece reflects the problem with Richmond Highway. Too many people think in terms of "Gee, what would be nice there" instead of "Gee, how can we make things quick and smooth for developers who want to invest here." The result is a planning process that establishes a vision that is perfect in every way except for the fact that there's no money to make it happen. The development that does occur (like the King's Crossing Wal-mart) is outside the planning process because the planning process is based on fantasy. Instead of trying to recreate Ballston or Wilson Blvd without Metrorail, maybe we should be trying to attract the investment capital which is really out there by being more flexible.

So in that vein, what kind of business do you think would be interested in this area?

We do need more recreational things on Rte 1. The first issue however is consistent sidewalks. Directly across the street are houses that can not safely access the stores because there is no consistent sidewalks in that area. You walk in front of Village of Gum Springs then you run into a overgrown vacant lot, then to a stop sign and walking machine that does not work. Fix this first so that people can really take advantage of the new smart growth way of development.
SO back to Entertainment, other than Chuck E Cheese, there is no entertainment-related venues on Rte I. There is a bowling alley that's tucked in the basement in the plaza, that no longer has shoppers, across the street from the New hybrid Walmart. The Costco did replace a Movie theatre that was there. Does anyone know what happened to the movie theatre? I know it wasn't AMC, Maybe a AMC theatre with a restaurant anchor and/or popular retail store would be a nice addition to Rte 1. A Dave and Busters or similar establishment, to bring to a vibrant night life to Rte 1. Maybe reconstruct the underutilized parking lot to develop a open space plaza and/or mini park with bences, water feature and we can have Live Music on the weekends.....There's some things to consider. I live in this area and I really think more can be done with this entire plaza. Mount Vernon, in general, consist of very well-off homeowners. We shouldn't have to drive to Kingstown, Springfield, Potomac Yard and/or Crystal City for quality.

What about an ODD LOTS or a JOB LOTS or an OLLIE'S OUTLET or something of that nature. Any of these would do great business in the area and have a good reputation for fairness, good prices, attractive store fronts.

I would love to see an Ollie's Outlet in that space. This area seems to be the lost step-child of the area. I've been in other - less dense - areas and they seem to have many more diverse offerings for shopping.

A good, locally owned restaurant

Me too. I asked them what happened and they said the owners didn't want to renew their lease.

That makes no sense to me, there must have been more to it, like the owners not wanting to renew the lease at that monthly rate, or something. Better to have something in there paying rent and bringing business to the other stores than have it empty.

I agree with the trader joe's idea. If they can shoehorn one into Old Town, this space can accommodate one, too! A sporting good store would be my second choice, we don't have one and we sure have lots of families who need to buy equipment for their kids on soccer, baseball, hockey and football teams. Plus it's close to Gold's Gym, which would be an advantage for people who need gym clothes and accessories as well as some equipment for home use (when they can't get to the gym). No sports authority here, they are such a rip off.
Yeah, it would have been nice if Home goods had stayed, but apparently not enough of us were going in there. This shopping center has few stores that attract anyone, the parking lot is noticably empty. It needs more than one "anchor" to get traffic through there. I love the UCM store, but there's really not much else, at least for me.

I love the idea of Trader Joe's, World Market or a good family run restaurant, something like Joe's Place in Arlington or Primo's in Belle View . . .

For those who want a Traders Joe's (the vast majority so far), recommend you take action to encourage them to come here. Send them a request at Trader Joe's http://www.traderjoes.com Once on their website, click on About Trader Joe's to recommend a new location.

I think Jeffrey Pandin makes an excellent point. However, since the question that is posed is merely "What would you like to see here?", I must agree wth the majority. A Trader Joe's would be an awesome addition to our area. Kudos to Greg Crider for encourging us to take this a step further and take action via Trader Joe's website.

I voted for Trader Joe's, but when I think about it, I'd much prefer a My Organic Market - aka MOM's. I have no doubt it would do a booming business and this LOCAL chain has shown great flexibility in the type, style and size of store space it can locate in.

A MOM's would be fabulous! It would free me from the clutches of the evil Whole Foods Market that eats my paycheck every week! I think you are right, it would do a booming business.

DId anyone see what the owners of the shopping center in Huntington across from the metro are doing? They are using website that asks residents what type of business establishments the community needs. So in that case, the owners are seeking public comment and hopefully will be acting on that. I can't remember the name of the website. But there is probably someone here with a better memory than mine... (I hope)

Tear it down. There's too much visual pollution on Rt. 1, and they keep building more! Why don't some of these new businesses locate in an existing store front rather than breaking ground on a whole new building. I will never understand why we can't have some well maintained green space and use the buildings we already have.
