The Virginia Senate race, often touted by some political analysts as one of the most expensive in the country, is living up to its reputation.

The Senate campaign for the Democratic nominee, former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, raised $3 million from April 1-June 30, the campaign reported Wednesday morning.

Kaine faces Republican nominee, former senator and former Gov. George Allen on the ballot in November.

More than 70 percent of the $3 million came from donors who gave less than $200, the Kaine campaign noted in its press release. In all, the campaign has raised $10.4 million from 27,000 donors, has $2.7 million on hand and has spent $3.5 million on fall advertising.

The latest figures from the Federal Election Commission show that the Allen campaign has raised $6,888,769 as of May 23.

The Virginia Senate race ranks fifth in the nation in total campaign donations raised ($17,632,669, the most recent figures available) and third in the country in campaign spending of nearly $12 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The Virginia Senate race was outranked in spending by races in Texas and Massachusetts.

The top Virginia ZIP codes giving to Allen are 22101, 22102 and 23226 (McLean, McLean and Richmond), according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The top ZIP codes giving to Kaine are also 22101, as well as 22314 (Alexandria) and 22207 (Arlington).

An analysis of the latest FEC figures available, by the Center for Responsive Politics, shows a majority, 55 percent, of Kaine's campaign funds coming from outside of Virginia. The analysis showed that 66 percent of Allen's campaign funds came from donors in Virginia. An analysis using the very latest donations made to the campaigns was not available.
