Virginia Gun Owners: Celebrating 'Open Carry' Friday at Starbucks?

Celebrating Second Amendment, activists say "2-22 is our holiday."

Gun rights activists in Virginia are celebrating the Commonwealth's open-carry gun laws and the Second Amendment — the right to bear arms — Friday (the date is 2/22) by supporting Starbucks.

So if you're stopping in for a latte Friday, don't be surprised if you see a couple of local gun owners gathered to celebrate the Commonwealth's open-carry gun laws. The open carrying of a handgun in Virginia is lawful.

Ed Levine, an executive member of the Virginia Citizens Defense League and founder of Virginia Open Carry, told The Washington Post the point of the Starbucks day is “to show the general public that good guys carry guns too."

The group's Facebook page Friday reads:

This is a new *nationwide* grassroots holiday for people who support our most basic civil right.

>> Spend $2 at Starbucks to support a company that supports YOUR human rights, especially the most important right of all, self-defense and the 2nd Amendment.

>> The "2/22" represents both the specific day of this holiday each year, and *also* represents the three reasons that the Founders enshrined the pre-existing right into our founding document:

2 = defense of ourselves.
2 = defense of our families and communities.
2 = defense of our great country.

One participant on the Facebook page posted a photo of a gun on a tabletop next to two Starbucks cups and said: "Showing my support to Starbucks for their support of 2nd Amendment rights."

Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson told The Washington Post “our longstanding position is to comply with local laws in the communities we serve. We think that’s the right way to ensure a safe environment for our partners,” which is both employees and customers.

Starbucks has the right to allow these gun loving nut jobs open carry assault weapons into their coffee shops. I do not feel comfortable being around anyone who is so paranoid that they need to bring military style weapons to get a cup of coffee, and I will not bring my family to any of their establishments. Why they want to allow their image to be used by the gun lobby is beyond me http://gunsandcoffee.us/

I'm with you Rob. The I Love Guns and Coffee logo came from a gun shop owner here on Whidbey Island and I have sent several letters to corporate about it only to be told it's parody and they can't do anything about it. This new information tells me that their agenda is changing. They were placed on the World's Most Ethical Companies list in 2012, just to spit it the face of those that put them there the following year. I will no longer use any Starbucks products or establishments and I will share that opinion with all I talk to.

Military style weapons and assault weapons? Last time I checked a handgun wasn't an assault rifle. Apparently the whole point of that event just went right over your head.

People were carrying both Bobby. It is rather jarring seeing Ar-15's at a Starbucks in Alexandria. And unless that person s a member of law enforcement, or armed forces, i do not feel comfortable bringing my family in there.

Ok, yeah anything more than a handgun is overboard. Did not realize people were actually bringing rifles. They need to leave that for the gun shows.

Why not just wear a sticker that says "I'm a good guy." Really fellows this is not the pioneer days or the old wild west days. If you want to wear your guns, boys and girls go on a cattle round up and drink your brew at the campsite. Whats next Starbucks fancy little milk pistols drawn in cappuccinos?

I've supported this effort since it started, and Starbucks long before that, because they are a company that respects my Second Amendment right to keep *and bear* arms.

I'm not terribly disappointed someone else might leave, or not go to Starbucks, because I'm carrying my firearm there. I believe those who are that afraid of inanimate objects would be best served by staying in their homes, where any inanimate object that attacks you can be readily corralled and identified.

I will state that in 10 years of openly carrying my sidearm in the area, I've never had a bad reaction -- never has anyone run away screaming. It must not be anywhere near as scary as some would have you believe.

Here's a little hint, just in case you need it, though. (The gun won't go off if there's no finger on the trigger.) Don't tell just everyone; we wouldn't want facts to get in the way of emotional arguments.

I will never buy Starbucks again. Hang up your guns when you come to town, per Wyatt Earp, who brought safety to the wild west.

Some of the people here just don't get. It's about the 2nd amendment and freedom. People on here think if someone has a gun it's like there a lepore or something. Like someone else said they don't go off unless you put your finger on the trigger and pull it. I don't leave home without my gun. I have it on me at all times. But I don't bring it out and wave it around and nor do other legal law a bidding citizens who have a Concealed Carry permit or who choose to open carry. Open carry is just that. Open carry in a holster on your belt for the world to see. These people are not committing crimes. These are the good guys, people who follow the law. People need to wake up on these gun issues! Gun control is not about guns it's about control of the people. The constitution states: under no circumstances shall these rights be infringed! People need to stop bowing down to big Government and allowing Obama and his administration to strip us of our rights! Thank you Starbucks for standing up for the 2nd amendment and freedom!

Actually Shawn, it is not, and you missed the point. As I said previously, starbucks has the right to allow people to open carry in their stores, they also have the right to choose not to. I think that people who are not sworn law enforcement officers have really no goo reason to bring guns into a coffee shop, and I do not trust them or their judgement, so I choose to not go to their establishment.

You should brush up on your Constitution, because it says no such thing that under no circumstances shall these rights be infringed. That is ridiculous.

Rob, you state it clearly. You don't trust me -- and solely because of a piece of equipment I carry. You have chosen to be distrustful of another human being. That saddens me, but only on your behalf. You miss a lot that way.

If you met me and spoke to me, without realizing I was carrying, you would probably find me a very trustworthy, ordinary American. Someone or something has convinced you that since I don't hide my ability to defend myself if necessary, I'm evil.

Interestingly, you'd be amazed at the number of people I speak with who don't even notice.

Rob your correct. No it doesn't say that literaly. I figured most people wouldnt take it the way you did. Knowing what it says, be able to understand the way I said it. Here's what it says exactly.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
This also means you have the right to protect yourself family and property against the government and or foreign invaders (see the 5th Amendment) I could care less if you go or don't go to Starbucks any more. I can say with honesty I haven't been a religious customer to Starbucks but I will from now on support them because they support the constitution an freedom. I am an average guy no one ever has a problem talking with me or even realizes I have a weapon. by the way. Some "citizens" are trained better than lawenforcement! For those that again dont realize what is real and what is not. Not saying me but quite a few people in the DMV have some serious weapons training and skills. I have been around guns all my life so I don't have a problem with them. Most people that have been trained don't. It all comes down to people being uneducated on guns and how to use them fear them.
