Carl Sandburg Middle School students danced to Batala Washington D.C., an all-female percussion group, on Friday during the school's Multicultural Event and Food Tasting Extravaganza.

The annual event, designed to showcase afterschool programs, was free and open to the community. It also featured the talents of local performers from the Washington metropolitan area, incuding Capoeira Candeias, a Brazilian martial arts group; Salsa Vive, featuring choreographers Ricardo Fernandez and Sara Shull Sidar; and the HipHop Youth Company from Born2Dance Studios in Vienna.

Members of the school's Cheer Squad, Dance Team, Step Club, Jazz Band, Drama Club and Bollywood Dance groups also participated.

Organizers included parent volunteers Anna Knapp and Marina Hoffman with the assistance of Assistant Principal Jane O'Hara, fine arts teacher Elizabeth Malone and Afterschool Program Director Adrian Cleckley. The lighting and sound were run entirely by seventh- and eighth-grade "Stage Crew" drama students.

This piece was sent to Fort Hunt Patch by Marina Hoffman, an event organizer. Patch has not verified this information.
