I am so grateful for underground power lines and NOVEC! In my area, the power did not even flash. I have several neighbors with breathing issues and cannot tolerate the heat, so it is good to know that they will be ok!

Power is out in fairfax/ mosby woods area. Many stoplights are still out, some are operational again (chain bridge/123 & Fairfax blvd is working). Gas stations are out of service though.

We live in Mount Vernon area, and have been without power since last night. The house is an oven, and humidity horrible. The power is still not restored, and I'm afraid it will be days until it is. I really wish Dominion Power would hire more workers or seek assistance from the government.

Has power been restored to River Oaks/Langley Forest?

Where are the local cooling centers in the Mt. Vernon area? Dominion Power and FFX county should coordinate distribution of ice for its citizens. FFX county, where are you when we need YOU? A bit of ingenuity put forth by the bureaucrats for its taxpayers would go a long way to calm us down a bit. Very poor communications from FFX county via the media is horrible.

I live in Ft Hunt. We got power back for around 30 minutes today around 1215pm. Its been out again since 1245pm. More storms tonight. Going on a re-con mission to see what's what.

Have been at Larkin Remodelers, LLC helping to dispatch crews providing tarp all over the area today even despite our own outage first thing this morning. Worked remotely until the power came back up around 1PM. Getting fast food was more of a chore than usual with the phone lines working at about 40% capacity and with the closures of the usually dependables (McD's and 7-11) which were also without power. I was finally able to go online and order from Pizza Hut but the delivery man told me they still did not have phone service. Definitely a mess!

Any update for the Gate of McLean??? I have to find a pet boarding place for my cat if the power won't be restored soon since most of those cooling centers are not pet welcome.

I heard from my neighbors finally, via cell - power is finally back on in our area. I'll keep all of you in my thoughts until everyone has power back and has heard from their relatives. What a vicious storm! And I read on one site that more storms could hit tonight!

A healthy sizable limb broke off our tree last night and straddled our fence into the neighbors yard. Neighbor cut the portion on his size early this morning and tossed it all back in my yard. We live in Fairfax & coming back from being out of town during the storm. Are most restaurants & businesses up and running? Are grocery stores picked dry? We're driving back so we were wondering if it's best to get supplies before we hit the area. Any advise?

Best to fill the gas tank and pick up provisions before returning to the area. Stores are busy (if open) and lines are long; you may not find everything you want. Try to find a campstove or charcoal grill if you don't have one and stock up on bottled water as well as canned goods such as soups or chili that you can heat and eat, just in case. Lots of power still out.

Gwen, I am down Clifton Rd and our farm does not have power - about a mile or so from 123/Burke Lake. There is a tree and wire down across Clifton Rd and I'm not sure if it's back up yet.

I am from England, and used to plan out where the engineers would dig down to lay cables - this not only did away with unsightly overhead wires, but on the whole was a more dependable way of delivering electricity - I believe they use this method in Florida due to inclement weather, did not realise New York also did this. There are no guarantees with any form, but it is less likely to cause problems by laying underground - and does not clutter up streets etc - in other words it looks lovely!

Doesn't burrying of cables make it almost impossible to add a new line or repair a line that has been damaged? Not to mention, that the soils eat away the protective coating to the wires and also that it puts the wires down to the level of rodents that love the taste of this wire coating? Burying utility lines isn't always the perfect solution, it also adds to the cost of installation.

I have left a comment regarding rats V underground cables John - I may have posted on a different page - sorry! We have rats in the UK John, there are certain coatings which make chewing through impervious - to dig down if a repair or addition is needed is quite easy. that was my job, to supply the engineers with the blueprints so they knew exactly where to dig. Florida would also have the answer to the rodent problem. My concern is, that the people of Fairfax, or anywhere else be spared this from happening again. I truly respect your point of view, but for me the health, safety and well being of all should come before money, it has been done, is being done, and more should be done. Nothing is perfect, but with todays technology it should be a viable option.

As a former consultant to FEMA, I know that in rural areas undergrounding cables is cost-prohibitive (though it can be done). The life cycle cost of burying electric power cables in rural areas is 5 times to the cost of overhead – even in coastal areas prone to hurricanes!
In time, heavily suburban and urban areas can be undergrounded. It is still VERY expensive. If a community chooses to do so, they are likely to do it in sections (one area at a time).
The good story is that the most vulnerable areas (due to old trees) are less vulnerable now.
I think we need to think about WHY the storms happened. And what the responsible thing to do is. THAT is why I am running for Congress. Because the incumbent does not, is not cable of that, and or is not willing to face the music.
