SFDC Taking Nominations for 2012 Mary Thonen Awards
The awards honor commercial property owners on Route 1 who have made efforts to beautify their sites.
The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation is now taking nominations for the 2012 Mary Thonen Beautification Program Awards.
The program, named in the memory of the SFDC’s former board president and longtime volunteer, honors commercial property owners along Route 1 who have made extraordinary efforts to beautify their sites. The program has been in place for more than a decade.
Past recipients have been recognized for enhancing their properties through improved landscaping, architectural ornaments, mixture of trees and shrubs and colorful plantings. More important than the size and scale of the improvements is the effort the property owners undertake to improve their part of the community.
Property owners who have made such improvements or know of a property that has are encouraged to contact the SFDC. The awards are open to all properties that are visible from Route 1 between the beltway and the Fairfax County Parkway south of Fort Belvoir.
Nominations should include photographs of the property and a brief narrative explaining how the property adds to the corridor’s visual appeal. Applications may be submitted by email to email@example.com or in hard copy to Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation, 8850 Richmond Hwy., Suite 105, Alexandria, VA 22309.
Applications are due by Sept. 30, and awards will be announced in November. Anyone with questions about the program can contact the SFDC at 703-360-5008.
