Route 1 Dispatches: Costco Construction Begins

Huntington residents spoke about the issue of flood protection for their community at a Board of Supervisors public hearing Thursday. As of Tuesday, the “Stop the Floods” petition had more than 1,000 signatures from Fairfax County residents.

Construction on the new Costco on Richmond Highway began this week. The existing Mount Vernon Multiplex theater will be demolished sometime in the near future, said David Versel of the SFDC.

Thieves have been stealing unattended packages at homes located in the Mount Vernon District, according to police. Police are asking residents to take extra precautions when ordering a package for delivery. Larcenies in the Mount Vernon District also increased in 2011, according to a new report issued by Fairfax County Police.

An Alexandria man was arrested Wednesday in connection to the February burglary of an 82-year-old Mount Vernon woman's home, said Fairfax County Police.

TitleMax will open in the Cooper Center shopping center in June, making it the second car title lending business to open its doors on Route 1 since January. The car title lending business has grown since legislation was passed allowing out-of-state residents to obtain car title loans.
