UPDATE (2:24 p.m.): The vehicles have been removed from the roadway and traffic is moving freely.
A crash that involved up to nine vehicles Wednesday morning tied up traffic on southbound Route 1 near the intersection with Lockheed Boulevard.
Fairfax County police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said the crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. and involved numerous vehicles in rear-end collisions. Police received one report that seven vehicles were involved and another report that nine were involved, she said.
Some of the vehicles are being towed from the scene. Two people were taken to an area hospital, but they did not have life-threatening injuries, Caldwell said.
It’s unclear how many lanes were affected by the crash, Caldwell said. Police are on the scene directing traffic. Northbound traffic has also shut down at the crash scene.
