After more than a year in business, the HomeGoods store on Richmond Highway will close its doors Jan. 12.

The store is closing due to a trend of slow sales, according to an employee who wished to remain anonymous.

HomeGoods opened in May 2011.

The store donated $5,000 to UCM to support the community at its grand opening.

We finally get a nice store on Rt. 1 and now it's closing. Shame on all of us that live in the Mt. Vernon area for not supporting a higher quality of stores...no wonder decent stores will not open here....lack of support!

Higher quality store? By their own description "a chain of off-price home fashions stores" does not sound like better quality but then "quality" is an ambiguous term much like the word "luxury" used to describe the apartments at the Heights at Groveton. These notions of quality and luxury are inconsistent with developer consultant findings that high end retailers will not locate on Richmond Highway. Their conclusions are based on demographic studies suggesting that Richmond Highway is demographically challenged. A perspective that in my view is racially and economically based. Perhaps a more appropriate term would be faux quality and faux luxury. Route 1 communities go hat in hand before developers begging for better quality retail on the corridor and what we get are 2nd rate retailers and development that business leaders dress up with semantic jargon. The rents are most likely going up at this locale due to anticipated consumer traffic heading to the nearby Costco site under development. How would this place even hope to survive competing with both Costco and Walmart? Besides, if you really like the place, go to the one in Kingstown.

I am very sad and disappointed that the store is closing. My mom and I loved to go over there and spend the day shopping. The store was very organized and the staff was very friendly. Not much else to say!

It's a shame, but I can't say I'm very surprised. The one time I went there to buy a picture frame, their selection was not great, so I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond instead. Without much else in the shopping center to drive traffic there, I'm not sure they could compete with BB&B and TJ Maxx which are larger stores in a shopping center filled with stores where busy families can get a lot of errands done. Would love to see a Trader Joe's go in this space.

According to HomeGoods management whom I spoke with, the store is closing because it was not able to reach a fair equitable lease agreement with its landlord. It did not wish to leave particularly after the extensive renovation after replacing AJWright. HomeGoods is a part of the AJWright and TJMaxx family.

Hi Queenie,

Thanks so much for letting us know what's going on with the store closing. That's such a shame they weren't able to reach a fair agreement with its landlord.

It's a shame. I like Home Goods better than any of their other brands. I'm always treated well there, and never go in that at least one person doesn't check to see that I'm finding what I need.

I love Home Goods and shop their stores in other places but this was a hard location to get in and out of. Wish they could find a place in Hybla Valley mall. Even then, I'm really sorry to lose a quality retailer on our end of Rte 1. Trader Joe's would be the ultimate quality store!

If it's true they couldn't reach a deal with the landlord, that makes TWO stores that have had that problem. It's why Cycle Sport left - and now the nearest motorcycle shop is in Woodbridge.

This was one of the best displayed stores of its kind that I have seen on the East Coast! Things were always organized by colors/ styles and packages were not torn through and dirty unlike most of the TJ Maxx and similar stores in the area. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I am so disappointed it is closed! Maybe the manager can move to the one in Kingstowne and show them how to run a clean and beautiful store.

I am sad too. The tjmaxx up the road is difficult to access. That property is such a traffic knot. Homegoods was bright and shiney! A good selection for sale and great staff.I always bought more than I intended! It was such a pleasure to visit. A great place for intelligent purchases. I miss it already.
