Construction crews started to demolish the former Mount Vernon Multiplex Cinemas building on Route 1 Tuesday morning.

Preliminary work on the site began in early April. The demolition of the former multiplex site will make way for the new Costco Wholesale expected to open in 2013. The completed building is expected to cover more than 143,000 square feet.

Heading North on Rte 1 today @ 4pm the left turn lane to Ladsen La was so backed-up the left travel lane was gridlocked. Will be interesting to see how this turn lane can be lengthened or improved to handle the onslaught of additional traffic into Costco.

Greg:

They were required to make some limited improvements as part of their redevelopment, but the road isn't going to get widened much.

I wrote about this way back when it was being considered here:

And residents of Ladson Lane are now being funnelled onto Route 1, since their access to Walmart (and points north via the service road) are now closed. And for some reason when you try and make a left to get out of Ladson Lane, the lights on Route 1 are timed so you hit every. single. one. All the way up to Old Town.
