Alexandria-area children flocked to Art at the Center Friday morning for the organization’s annual Big Chalk Draw.

The community art event was held from 8 to 10 a.m. at the center, located at 2804 Sherwood Hall Lane. Children and adults took chalk to pavement in the center’s parking lot to create a patchwork of colorful designs, drawings and hopscotch boards.

Kathryn Coneway, Art at the Center owner, said she hosts the event every year on the Friday before Labor Day.

“It’s a good opportunity to practice getting up early for school, and we can get out before it gets too hot, and really just have a community art event and let the kids use the parking lot as their canvas,” she said.

The event also included a collection of new book bags and school supplies to benefit Good Shepherd Housing & Family Services.
