New Walmart Opens Ahead of Schedule
The 'urban' design offers an increased fresh produce and grocery section with emphasis on local and Latin American food.
The closest Walmart to the District of Columbia just moved into town.
The Urban Prototype Walmart on Richmond Highway near North Kings Highway finished last minute touches on Tuesday and opened its doors to the public at 8 a.m on Wednesday. The 80,000 square foot, 275 employee building has been under construction since April and is the first store of it's kind in Virginia.
"The customer wants access to affordable, healthy, local food and quality jobs," Director of Community Affairs, Steven V. Restivo said. "We offering true, one-stop shopping. If you only want to buy groceries, you can easily visit just one third of the store."
The new urban Walmart offers many new features and is stocked to be the most convenient for the consumer. In the front, the store offers a multi-channel center, were shoppers can have items shipped to the store for free, apply for jobs and work on their wedding registries. Customer can even order items online to pick up at the store within four hours.
In the grocery department, an expanded produce section and expansive deli counter command a large area. The store's goal is to feature as much locally grown produce as possible to support the local economy.
"At the end of the day, we want to be part of the solutions," Restivo said.
A study of demographics revealed within a three mile radius of the Walmart, 40 percent of the population is Latino and the food selection reflects that. The usual four feet of Hispanic food has been increased to 40 feet and will offer many items not found in other stores.
"We're committed to our community and its demands," Restivo said. "All of our signage is bilingual for that reason."
Over 150 of the applicants were residents from Washington, D.C., but Walmart chose to stay local and hire 70 percent of their workers from the community. Only 20 employees from the D.C. area were accepted.
Wednesday's grand opening will feature samples, vendor events and a demonstration of Apple products.
The store is located at 6303 Richmond Highway and is opened from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
